When introduced into the world, it was first used by many heroes in ancient times; they donned different forms of protectorates that complimented their fighting style, ensuring greater longevity in battle. While some were heavy and some were light, each form of armor nonetheless delivered what it promised. Protectorates are now quite common and can be purchased at a weapon shop at any time.

Description: A mask that wraps around the shinobi's lower jaw and up around his face, offering light protection from basic attacks. It is used in conjunction with a forehead protector to provide full protection of the head without suffering mobility.

Description: Wrappings that cover the face and protect the shinobi's identity. Although light, the leather fabric that comprises it allows the user to at least have minimal protection to their face without suffering any movement loss.

Description: A standard issue flak jacket all shinobi receive. Although thin and comprised of weak materials, it still provides basic defense against simple attacks, while allowing the user to move about with maximum speed.

Description: A full length robe with a hood that can cover the entire shinobi. It is made from an extremely thick material that can provide ample protection in battle. Buckler

Description: The buckler is a small, round shield gripped in the fist. Generally used as a companion weapon in hand-to-hand combat, this Protectorate is useful due to its maneuverability, as well as its overall control. Although its small size makes it poor protection against projectile weaponry, it makes up by being light and easy to handle, useful in deflecting from an opponent's and attacking in the same stroke.

Kite Shield

Description: The kite shield comes either in the form of a reverse teardrop shape or later on, flat-topped. The tapering point extended down to either a distinct or rounded point. Believed to be an evolution of the simple round shield purely to guard one whole flank of a rider when in combat, the shield gained popularity as it allowed them to guard their foreleg when in a mêlée. It was either flat in section, or featured a gradual curve, to better fit the contour of the human torso, much in the style of a scutum.

Description: The scutum consists of a convex surface made of two planks glued together, the outer surface being then covered first with canvas and then with calf-skin. Its upper and lower rims are strengthened by an iron edging which protects it from descending blows and from injury when rested on the ground. It also has an iron boss fixed to it which turns aside the most formidable blows of stones, pikes, and heavy missiles in general.

The name has been extended to many other entities, and the concept of a protective shield is found in other mythologies, while its form varies across sources.

Description: A slightly more advanced Protectorate, the retractable shield is a gauntlet-based weapon, proving shielding defense through a sudden shield fanning open from the very gauntlet.
